Charles Bonnet Syndrome (March 14, 2010)
CHARLES BONNET SYNDROME
|
Charles Bonnet Syndrome is not a mental illness but a visual impairment condition. people who have CBS suffer with vivid hallucinations, but they are very aware that they are not real. Hallucinations of CBS are smaller then those you may normally experience from a mental disorder and sufferers of CBS cannot taste, smell or hear the hallucination, they can just see them. Charles Bonnet Syndrome is more common in people who have suffered damage to their eyes and old age e.g. glaucoma. Not everyone develops CBS and diagnosis is usually quick. There is no time limit to how long the hallucinations last for. Sometimes they can last for a few hours and sometimes they can last all day and can greatly disrupt a persons everyday life. There is no known treatment available for this condition all though antidepressants may be prescribed as a person may become depressed due to suffering with the hallucinations, which can last for around 12 to 18 months, but it does vary greatly, due to the severity of the illness and the person who is suffering from it.
