Sleep Paralysis (October 20, 2009)
SLEEP PARALYSIS
Sleep Paralysis (also known as Old Hag Syndrome) is very common, and also been connected to narcolepsy. Here you will find a brief explanation on sleep paralysis.
|
Sleep Paralysis is a condition that sufferers experience just before they enter into a deep sleep or just as they are waking up. They experience the inability to make voluntary movements with their body. This only lasts for a short period of time but it can feel like a lifetime while the attack is happening and can be very terrifying for the sufferer.
Some of the symptoms of sleep paralysis are, unable to move any parts of the body, apart from the eyes (just before dropping of to sleep and just on waking up), very real and very vivid hallucinations, feelings of terror and sometimes feeling as though there is an inseen force present in the room. Not all sufferers experience all these symptoms at the same time, it varies greatly with each sleep paralysis felt. The sufferer is very aware and alert to their sleep paralysis and are fully awake when this is happening. The experience can be very frightening, especially if the person only has the attack on a few occasions. Sleep paralysis is a normal part of REM sleep as the paralysis prevents the dreamer from acting out his/her dreams by relaxing the muscles in the body to stop any involuntary movements the dreamer may make, but sometimes the brain will wake up before the body has time to adjust, hence causing the sleep paralysis. There are a number of reasons for the sleep paralysis including insomnia, narcolepsy and stress to name but a few. Treatment is usually on an advice and self help basis, depending on the patient, by ensuring regular sleep patterns are kept to. If the paralysis still persists, patients will normally be re-evaluated and further medical treatment may be prescribed by a doctor.
Sleep paralysis is also associated with OBE, alien contact and spirit interaction but these theorys are widely debated from both believers and sceptics.
